Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. A little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your Central Florida home and your insurance claim if a storm hits. Use this checklist before the next storm is in the forecast.
1. Check Your Roof
Look for missing, cracked or lifted shingles and damaged flashing. Your roof is your home’s first line of defense, and small issues can turn into major leaks in high winds.
2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged gutters overflow and send water toward your foundation. Make sure downspouts direct water well away from the home.
3. Inspect Windows, Doors and Shutters
Confirm that hurricane shutters or panels are complete, labeled and easy to install. Check that impact windows and doors close and latch properly.
4. Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Items
Trim dead or overhanging branches and plan where patio furniture, grills and decor will go when a storm approaches.
5. Review Your Insurance and Wind Mitigation Report
Make sure you understand your windstorm deductible. If you have replaced your roof or added impact protection since your last wind mitigation inspection, an updated report could qualify you for additional premium discounts.
6. Document Your Home
Take photos and video of your home’s exterior, interior and valuables. Store them, along with your policy and important documents, in the cloud.
7. Prepare Supplies
Keep water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit ready, and know your evacuation zone.
After the Storm
Once it is safe, look for roof damage, water intrusion and moisture. Hidden moisture can lead to mold within days in Florida’s climate. A professional inspection with thermal imaging can help find what you cannot see.
